The Faculty of Art - Music Conservatory of Tromsø University College is one of 6 national music conservatories in Norway which provide graduate and post graduate training, and the only college in Northern Norway providing music education in both performance and teaching studies.

The North Norwegian Music Conservatory was founded in 1971 and became one of the state colleges in 1979. As from the start of the 1994/95 academic year The North Norwegian Music Conservatory has been a part of the Tromsø University College, Faculty of Art. In 1985 the conservatory moved into a fine new building with concert hall, library, sound studio and reading room with stereo equipment, in addition to teaching and practice rooms. Students have their own practice wing which can be used twenty-four hours a day!

Comments from the students point to the fact that the study of music in Tromsø is a valuable experience and takes place in an enjoyable milieu. It is possible to have close contact with each other regardless of the differing types of studies taken or instruments played. During the last 10 years the faculty has been enriched by the contacts between the music conservatory of Tromsø and the music conservatories of Russia and China which has led to students coming to Tromsø to take post graduate courses. There is an international milieu among both students and staff.

There is a special programme of co-operation between the conservatory in Tromsø and many conservatories in Europe through the ERASMUS, NORDPLUS, and BARENTSPLUS exchange programmes.

We are delighted to present some of our students during this cruise. The repertoire is full of variety from Norwegian folk songs to opera and jazz and more.
