The World Opera Presents Aida: A Political Drama of Power and Jealousy

The World Opera invites you to experience a political drama centered on power struggles and jealousy when Aida is broadcast live from The Met!

Soprano Angel Blue stars in her Met debut as the Ethiopian princess Aida, torn between her love and loyalty to her homeland. Aida has been kidnapped in Egypt and falls in love with General Radamès, who has been chosen to lead a war against her native Ethiopia. The opera follows her inner conflict as she navigates her love for the general, her devotion to her homeland, and her loyalty to her father. Alongside Angel Blue, mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi takes on the role of Aida’s Egyptian rival, Amneris, while tenor Piotr Beczała portrays Radamès in this gripping love triangle.

The Met’s music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, conducts this spectacular production directed by Michael Mayer. The staging transports the audience into the grand pyramids and gilded tombs of ancient Egypt through intricate projections and dazzling animations.

Giuseppe Verdi’s (1813–1901) Aida is an opera in four acts with a libretto by Camille du Locle. The performance lasts 3 hours and 40 minutes, including an intermission, and is part of the Northern Lights Festival program.

This screening is part of the longstanding collaboration with The World Opera in the North. With great pride and enthusiasm, The World Opera in the North presents live broadcasts from one of the world’s leading opera houses, allowing audiences to experience The Metropolitan Opera in New York from the Verdensteatret theater in Tromsø.

The performances in the Live in HD series are carefully selected by The Met and are shown as matinees in New York. Thanks to the time difference, we have the privilege of enjoying these as evening performances here in Norway. Met stars host the series, offering insights into the bustling life behind the scenes.
