Biekkas - In the Wind was composed by Niko Valkeapää for the opening of the Nils Aslak Valkeapää exhibition at the Hennie Onstad Museum in Oslo. This is the first time it’s performed in Northern Norway.
Through yoik, poetry and Sami music traditions, Valkeapää shows that Sami music has a greater breadth than the stereotypical perception of yoik.
- My Sami cultural heritage is my musical platform. In addition, over the years I have met other musical traditions and expressions on my travels around the world, both as a musician and in working with political indigenous issues, says Valkeapää.
The artist also says that he is inspired by popular music from when he grew up, including a dose of americana and the political singer songwriter tradition.
- In the lyrics, I try to convey both linear storytelling and frame narratives, in line with modern singer songwriter tradition, while allowing the yoik and the unspoken live in parallel - where sensory experiences are highlighted and allowed to unfold freely.
