One of the world's most renowned artists rounds off this year's festival together with the Arctic Philharmonic.
Angelique Kidjo is one of the world's most recognized artists, and during her career has released several albums to rave reviews from critics and the public alike. In 2015, she released the album SINGS, where several of her well-known songs were arranged for orchestra. The result was a meeting between the classical European tradition and the rhythmic power that characterizes the music from Kidjo's homeland of Benin. The album was awarded with a Grammy, the fifth in a row for Angelique Kidjo. It is this music that we get to hear when she stands on the main stage in Tromsø Kulturhus together with the Arctic Philharmonic.
- We are enormously looking forward to working with one of the world's most beautiful and important artists, a singer and musician for whom we have deep respect and who we have wanted to work with for a very long time, says program manager Catharina Bilsbak of the Arctic Philharmonic.
In addition to her musical merits, Kidjo is known for her commitment to, among other things, children's rights, the climate and the environment. She is an ambassador for Amnesty International, UNICEF and Oxfam, and has also established the foundation Batonga which works for African girls' right to education. In 2015, she was awarded the prestigious Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum in Davos. The award is given to cultural figures who, through their work and commitment, inspire inclusive and sustainable changes. She has also received Amnesty's Conscience Award for her commitment to human rights.
Angelique Kidjo is a firework of commitment, musicality and joy of playing. So take a seat and make yourself comfortable. Now the roof must be lifted.
The concert with Angelique Kidjo is a collaboration between the Northern Lights Festival, Bodø Jazz Open and the Arctic Philharmonic.
