Become a volunteer
Join us in creating one of the cultural highlights of the winter in Northern Norway!
Now you can registrer as a volunteer in 2026!
To carry out a ten-day festival, we rely on the help of our volunteers.
At Nordlysfestivalen, we’re lucky to have the world’s best volunteer, many of whom return year after year! But we would love to welcome even more people to the team!
We need those of you who are made for creating warm and welcoming audience experiences, and those who can transport people and equipment between venues. We need those who believe it’s important that everyone gets (at least) one cup of coffee during the day, and those who live to document everything that happens. We need those who love culture, and those who are eager to try something new. We need all of you.
Would you like to join the team and help create one of the region’s most spectacular festivals?

Volunteer benefits
Thanks for your help, you can enjoy the festival for free!
You get to be part of a wonderful group of volunteers who come back year after year — some have been around since the 90s!
We also offer:
- Volunteer party after the festival
- Snacks and drinks available on short shifts and a meal on shifts over 6.5h
- Waffle lunches during the festival at our festival hub at Giisa, prepared by the volunteers
- Attestation of the work you have done
What do we expect from you?
- You work a minimum of three shifts, or 15 hours
- You meet at the agreed time
- You meet the audience and those you are at work with, with a smile and respect, answering questions and helping as best you can
- You do not drink alcohol or use other drugs while you are at work
You work to ensure that the venue is ready before the concert starts, in collaboration with the production manager from the festival staff.
You are responsible for the other volunteers on shift, assigning tasks on-site and handing out artist gifts on stage after the concert. A brief evaluation with the volunteers after the event is also part of the role. As a venue host, you can expect more responsibility and more work than other volunteers, as well as slightly longer shifts. This will vary greatly between different productions and venues.
Transport of guests/artists and transport of equipment, mainly to and from the airport/hotel–venue.
The transport team has two categories: passenger transport and equipment transport. You can choose which one you prefer in the registration form.
Equipment transport may involve some heavy lifting.
Those on transport duty will generally be scheduled for 6–8 hour shifts. A detailed schedule will be provided later and is subject to last-minute changes.
Nordlysfestivalen uses its own cars, provided by Harila, so you do not need your own vehicle.
Requires a Class B driver's license.
Your main task is to greet the audience when they arrive and welcome them to the concert. You help audience members with whatever they need, and you scan tickets at events where tickets are sold.
You also assist the venue host with final preparations before doors open, and with tidying up after the event. Ticket scanning is done via an app on your personal phone. If this is not possible for you, please let us know so we do not assign you to events with ticket sales.
Food and drink are essential for everyone involved in the festival—both on stage and behind the scenes. You will be responsible for ensuring that the backstage areas at all our venues have the food and drinks they need.
This year we have our festival hub at Giisa in Rådstua Teaterhus, and this is where you will be based, with some foot traffic throughout the day.
Your job is to make sure volunteers have snacks and drinks available, and to prepare meals for those working shifts of more than 6.5 hours.
The role may require some running around the city, but you will receive help from the Runner. Shifts will be scheduled in blocks of up to eight hours.
Are you quick on your feet and good at handling tasks as they come? Then we need you. During the festival, it’s hard to predict where help will be needed most. We need people who can jump in and get to where they are needed quickly. When things are calm, you will be based at the festival hub at Giisa, Rådstua Teaterhus, helping with welfare and catering.
Your shifts will be scheduled in blocks of up to eight hours. We need volunteers both during the day and in the evening.
It doesn’t happen often—but sometimes equipment needs to be set up, moved, or dance mats need to be laid out. Do you have a body that can handle a bit of lifting and moving? We need you! Shifts here are typically short and intense, and will be scheduled as needed.
We also need people to help with various tasks before and after the festival, so please indicate in the form if you are available.
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that everyone will get their preferred category—putting the roster together is a puzzle, and not all categories require the same number of volunteers. But we will do our very best.
