In his latest work, Jaevriegaska — The Land Between Two Lakes, Marja Mortensson has been inspired by sacred mountains and mighty landscapes. The rivers, the seas, the sea and the landscape — they can both bind us together and cut us off from each other. We are in a time when, more than ever, we need to cherish what we hold dear: the water, nature, animals, food, culture and interpersonal relationships. There is more than lightning striking the mountains these days and we are in an intense struggle to protect nature from ever new encroachments.
Marja writes her lyrics in Southern Sami, heart language. It is her way of developing her artist language, but also a conscious choice to keep the language alive and pass it on to the next generations. An invaluable work that requires tremendous daily effort. The melodies and the way of shaping the music are closely linked to the textual themes of the work. Telling and joiking with a double bottom, is part of the Sami heritage. Come and listen to the melody of the language. If not all words are understood in the moment, we share the moment of being together in the here and now, in the language and the music.
For Jaevriegaska, Marja has expanded her trio with the Tromsø-based guitarist, Kristian Olstad, who adds an exciting sonorous side to the music. Her regular fellow musicians, Jakop Janssonen and Daniel Herskedal, colorize the work with their unique musicality and instrumental mastery.
